Edge-Lit vs Backlit LED Lightboxes: What Buyers Should Compare
The main difference is where the LEDs sit. In an edge-lit lightbox, suitable light sources are positioned along the sides of the construction. In a backlit lightbox, light sources sit behind the illuminated graphic. Neither description determines the correct module, spacing or cabinet depth by itself.
Compare the cabinet before comparing the LED
| Selection input | Edge-lighting enquiry | Backlighting enquiry |
|---|
| Mounting space | Side profiles and positions available for the selected modules | Rear mounting surface and space behind the graphic |
| Optical arrangement | Light path across the cabinet and any light-guide or diffuser construction | Distribution from the LED layout toward the graphic |
| Dimensions | Illuminated width, height and internal depth | The same dimensions plus intended rows or array layout |
| Service access | How side-mounted sources and wiring can be reached | How rear-mounted sources and the supply can be reached |
Send photographs and a section drawing when replacing an existing system. An edge-lit assembly and a side-lit sign cabinet may use different optical constructions even if both place LEDs near an edge. Explain how your graphic is illuminated instead of relying on a short product label.
Match the module to the application
Compare LED lightbox modules by their stated working voltage, dimensions, LED arrangement and lens information. For a fabric display, also compare LED ladder lighting where the construction supports that format. The module’s lens and mounting direction are part of the selection; wattage alone cannot establish how the finished panel will look.
Evaluate the complete graphic, not an open LED test
A useful sample uses the intended graphic or fabric, the selected cabinet depth and the proposed mounting layout. Check the illuminated face for visible bright areas, dark areas and changes near edges. View the graphic from its intended audience position and record the supply and LED configuration used during the test.
Do not transfer another manufacturer’s spacing chart to an untested module. Any layout recommendation should refer to the exact module and cabinet construction. There is no single minimum depth or spacing value that this comparison can assign to every product.
Include power and service access in the enquiry
Illuminated width and height; internal cabinet depth.
Single- or double-sided graphic and material details.
Photos or drawings of the side profiles and rear surface.
Required colour temperature and model-specific lens option.
Power supply location, wiring routes and connector requirements.
Quantity of lightboxes and whether they share one approved design.
Discuss your lightbox lighting layout
Send the cabinet drawing and intended graphic material with the quantity. We can compare the relevant module formats and confirm the information needed for a sample evaluation.
